Korean Drama: Jungle Fish 2 – Not your normal teen drama

KBS World is trying something new with Jungle Fish 2. Typical teen dramas today have unrealistic boring storylines. It’s hard to tell one from another. With Jungle Fish 2, directors Kim Jeong-hwan and Min Du-sik are taking a different slant on teen dramas.

After stumbling upon the mysterious death of a high school girl, her friends set out to investigate what really happened.  During the investigation, the band of six friends are forced to look at and deal with their individual problems and fears.  The show highlights key social issues that Korean high school students are really facing today:  Educational corruption, pregnancy, family disputes, bullying, etc.

Here’s the teaser/trailer for Jungle Fish 2.

Popular Korean TV Networks you can watch online

There are quite a few national TV networks originating from South Korea.  Korean TV is comprised of two types of networks: Government owned channels and Corporate owned channels.  The three largest networks are KBS, MBC and SBS — two of those (KBS and MBC) are government owned channels.

The Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) is the largest Korean TV network in existence today.  It is popular for it’s nightly newscasts and highly successful historical drama series.  The historical dramas produced by KBS are so popular that other networks such as MBC and SBS have recently begun to produce their own versions of these successful network programs.

The second largest Korean TV network is the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).  Unlike KBS, MBC receives no government funding and relies almost exclusively on commercial advertising as a source of income.  MBC also rides the Korean drama popularity wave by producing one of the most popular dramas of all time — Dae Jang Geum.  MBC also had one of Korea’s first reality programs called “Infinite Challenge” which was one of the most popular entertainment programs for three years running.

The Seoul Broadcasting Station (SBS) is the only private commercial company that has a diverse enough network to broadcast country wide.  The Seoul Broadcasting Station officially changed their name to SBS in March of 2009.  SBS also produces many Korean drama programs such as “My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox (내 여자친구는 구미호)” and “I am Legend (나는 전설이다).”  SBS most closely resembles contemporary American TV networks since they also have a wide variety of news, variety and animated programming.  In addition, SBS airs programming from a variety of foreign partners such as NBC Universial (United States) and TF1 (France).

Korean TV Drama – Stairway to Heaven

Ask any Korean people what their favorite Korean drama is and most will say “Stairway to Heaven.” The show was popular all over Asia, especially the Philippines and a localized version of the show still runs today.

Why is Stairway to Heaven so popular?  For some reason, Korean people love watching TV filled with clichés and “Stairway to Heaven” is definitely not lacking in this department. The story centers around two childhood friends (Han Jung-suh and Cha Song Joo) who would have had a storybook life together if it weren’t for Han Jung-suh’s new step sister (Han Yoori) and her evil mother.  Then you have Cha Song Joo getting amnesia after being hit by a car.  If there’s a soap opera clichés that is missed, I’ve yet to find it.

Despite this, the cast is phenomenal and really take you on a roller coaster of emotion.  Korean TV Drama’s are one of the main reasons that people search for a way to watch Korean TV Online and now, through the invention of the Internet, you can watch Korean TV Online from anywhere in the world.
